Mobs—short for mobiles[1]—consists of peaceful or hostile creatures, generally spawned randomly in the game world depending on lighting, height and spawning block conditions. Some of them may drop more or less precious items. Mobs are created by mods only, so their exact behaviour depends on the mod or subgame you use.
Many subgames have at least some mobs. A notable exception is Minetest Game and doesn't have any mobs.
There are mods which add mobs as well.
